Southside Strays is an emergency canine rescue and sanctuary based in SE San Antonio, Texas.
We are a non-profit organization with a focus on rescuing and sheltering unwanted, abused, abandoned and neglected dogs found in and around the streets and rural fields of our surrounding area.
We rehabilitate with the goal of rehoming.
We are a donation based non-profit and proudly state that 100% of funds donated go directly to the needs of the dogs in our care.
It takes an average of $725 to rehabilitate and insure the best possible outcomes for the pups here at Southside Strays.
We do what we can with what we have in order to improve our community and the wellbeing of our canine residents.

About Southside Strays
Starting off as just a hope and a dream to help as many abandoned canines as possible, making room for the most flea bitten dog in a small home. One dog rehabilitated and adopted led to the next and the next. After experiencing the dire conditions of our city shelters, the dream of helping one at a time became a need, a necessity. Southside Strays was born
Working under Yellow Dog Rescue Ranch, based in Boerne Texas, we were able to reach more potential adopters.
By 2021, we became Southside Strays. We added vet care, vaccinations and spay/neuter to our responsibilities. We have created a safe, loving and fun environment in order to rehabilitate these dogs and ultimately re-home. By the time they leave us, they are physically healthier, more trusting and ready to live in a home with other humans and often other pets.

ETTA-8 year old Bulldog mix. Pulled from a breeding ring. Loving and playful with people and other pets.
DROVER-At just under a year, he is a friend to all! Small terrier mix giving Yellow Lab vibes.
SENORA-4 year old daughter of ETTA. Came from the same breeder and is now healthy and happy. Friendly to all people, Senora would do best as an only pet.
CHAVI-2 year old Boarder Collie/Lab tripod. She had a very rough start to her life, she is now the embodiment of a house cat. Would do best in a calm home.
MEET THE SCHNAPPS PUPPIES! - Miniature Schnauzer/Shepherd mix puppies only 3 months old. Fully vaccinated, microchipped and ready for a home. Absolutely adorable, energetic and loving souls. They will be medium sized dogs. There are five males and four females. All adopters must agree to spay/neuter by the age of 6 months.
HONDO-2 year old Can Corso. 120lbs of lap dog. People friendly, would do best as the only pet in the home.
RHODA-10 year old Jack Russel Terrier Mix. Sweet old gal, great with kids, other dogs and cats

Fostering is one of the most important contributions to the transformation of these dogs. You’re able to show them what it’s like to feel safe and loved. The majority of the dogs here at Southside Strays have never been in a home environment before. Our amazing fosters help them heal and become adoptable household pets.

Step 1: Don’t panic. Take a breath, you got this. Nothing needs to be done at hyper-speed. You got the immediate part out of the way. You potentially saved a life. Everything else can move at YOUR pace…

If the answer is yes, take a trip to your nearest vet clinic to check for a microchip or a rabies tag number. This is completely free, and they might even know the dog! You can ask about breed type, gender, fixed or not, and age while you’re there. This information will be useful later on

Again, dont panic! Let’s head home and set up a comfy place for your new visitor. This can be a spare bedroom, a bathroom, a walk in closet, a garage (if the temperature permits). All you need are some towels, sheets, blankets, and my personal favorite, puppy pads! They’re nervous, everything is new, they’re bound to have an accident! Be prepared for it!

ingredients:
6 puppy pads- x-large
1 sheet
2 towels
2-3 blankets
2 medium bowls
Step 1: Set up puppy pads( Dont have puppy pads? Use towels!) in the spot that makes the most sense for them to use the restroom. Usually the furthest away from the door.
Step 2: Preparing a place for your new rescue to sleep. Lay down your sheet away from the puppy pads. Next you will place your two towels on top, followed by your blankets. This gives a bit of comfort without spending money on a dog bed!
Step 3: Plave your two bowls side by side Make sure they are on the oposite side of the room of the puppy pads. Usually nearest to the door while still giving yourself the ablinity to open the door. One bowl will be for water, the other for food.
Setting up the room as such will be alot less confusing for the rescue, which in turn makes your life a whole lot easier... and cleaner! With food and bedding being on one side and puppy pads on the other, the rescue will recognize where the best place to use the restroom will be.

Your rescue was found on the street. Chances are, even if you dont see them, there are fleas present. Dawn dishsoap is a great product to use for a rescues first bath! Dawn will suffocate the live fleas (Please note: Dawn is NOT something to use to bathe often and should only be used in emergency cases). Get the rescue pup wet, lather on dawn, let the lather set for about 3-5 minutes, and then rinse.
Once the bath is done and everyone is dry, take some pictures! 2 or 3 usually does the trick. Now, it’s time to get posting. Leave the rescue in the room that has been set up to decompress, close the door and take a breathe. You’re doing great!

Easiest thing to do is to start with one post and then copy and past on to mulitple platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Nextdoor, etc. When creating the post add the area where the rescue was picked up, male or female, fixed or intact, temperament, color, breed and age. This info will help reconnect the dog to their owner OR help them make their way into a forever home.
